Long Weekend

Just because Portland, Oregon is an awesome place to live, doesn’t mean that sometimes you don’t want or need to get away. Vacations, even short ones, are good for the brain and for the soul. I have devoted quite a bit of time and space in this blog about places near Portland to get away from a night or weekend. But, I’d like to expand that to place to go for a long weekend. Places where you can hop on a plane in Portland and be somewhere in a relatively short time frame.

For the purposes of this entry, I have limited it to areas that are a four-hour flight away, or less. I hope you enjoy these suggestions:

    Vancouver, BC

Grab that passport card and a direct from flight from Portland to Vancouver, BC. In just over an hour, you can leave the hustle and bustle of Portland and enter into the pristine beauty of Vancouver, BC. Widely regarded as the cleanest city in the world, Vancouver has world class restaurants, terrific skiing, friendly residents, and a ton of tourist attractions.

    Las Vegas Nevada

In just over two hours, you can leave the temperate beauty of Portland, Oregon and be losing yourself in the oppressive heat of Sin City. Whether you’re a gambler or person who likes great shows and music, Las Vegas has something for everyone. And with the short flight time and cheap flights in and out, you may wonder why you don’t pop over every weekend.

    San Diego, California

Or, maybe you want something warmer than Vancouver. San Diego, California, which has perhaps the nicest climate in America, is a two-and-a-half-hour flight away from Portland.  Here, you can enjoy surfing in the Pacific Ocean, or just getting your tan on. And, with the Mexican border only half hour away, you can make it an international weekend without the jetlag.

    Juneau, Alaska.

Juneau is the only state capital in the United States that does not have a road going in or out. It is accessible only by plane or ferry. Getting here from Portland is not difficult. A half hour flight from Portland to Seattle followed by a two-and-a-half-hour flight from Seattle to Juneau. You gain an hour going as well and this time of year, the sun stays up for about twenty hours, which gives you plenty of time to check out the stunning natural beauty of Juneau, Alaska.

    Chicago, Illinois.

Yes, Chicago. From Portland to Chicago, it’s a flight of just under four hours. That seems mind boggling, but in Chicago, grab a pizza and a hot dog before making your way out to the Bean and enjoy the sights and sounds of one of the biggest cities in the world.

Portland is a great place to live. Not only do you have access to mountains, beaches, great food and great people—it’s now easier than ever to get away. Because when you come back from getting away, Home Sweet Home feels all the more sweeter.
