The Northern Oregon Coast is all fine and good… beautiful in fact. But that doesn’t mean that they’re aren’t other equally good options along the Oregon Coast. Siletz Bay near Lincoln City, on Oregon’s Central coast, about a two hours’ drive from downtown Portland is another favorite spot for me.
In keeping with my New Year’s resolution to visit the Oregon Coast more, I had to add Siletz Bay to my least.
Seaside and Cannon Beach are great. Favorites, even. Everyone knows about them though and sometimes, in an effort to keep my Portland weirdness finally tuned, I like to find something a little less known, a little off the beaten path. A little harder to get to.
And, of course, there is always something to do here: whale watching, golfing, fishing, hiking. If you love the outdoors, Portland is great. Add Gleneden Beach, only five miles south of Lincoln City, to your list of destinations. But, more than that, fine dining, plenty of shopping (my wife reminds me of this after each visit when I receive my credit card bill), and even a number of spas, this small community “Delivers a perfect cocktail of rocky beaches and civilized pursuits to ensure that no one leaves without vowing to return.” And, heck, there’s a casino five miles away for those nights when the wife and I want some adult entertainment.
But, let’s be honest. While I could easily make this a day trip, it’s so much more fun just to get away and, when I stay in Gleneden Beach, I stay at the Salishan Spa a Golf Resort.
The Salishan Spa and Golf Resort is 250 beachfront acres overlooking Siletz Bay in Gleneden Beach. Deluxe Rooms boast views of the bay or of the golf course and offer cedar and granite furnishings, luxurious linens, lush bathrobes, Wi-Fi, a fireplace, and an expansive bathroom. The missus and I, after a cozy night listening to the lapping of the ocean, like to spend our mornings at The Sun Room restaurant, for a freshly prepared breakfast of seasonal fruit and French toast with Oregon hazelnuts. Sometimes we bring the kids and the dogs, but, mostly, we just spend this time together and away from it all.
Close to wineries, golf courses, casinos, beaches, shopping: Gleneden Beach offers a little something for everyone and promises a unique experience each time. Two hours from Portland, it’s easy to get away here. I love living in Portland. It’s so close to everything and, no matter how good my getaway is, I always look forward to coming back.
