Since March, many of us have still been stuck at home. Even those of us dubbed “essential workers” that have been able to get out and go to the office (and enjoy the lack of traffic), are likely feeling cooped up at home, what with most public places in Portland still closed to the public. Many of you may even be wondering if this is all necessary, if the reaction to this pandemic is worse than the pandemic itself. I don’t want to get into that. There’s varying opinions on this and it’s not likely we will have any answers for many years.
So, for many of us, we just tow the line, do our part to stay healthy and not infect others and hope that we can return to some sense of normalcy soon.
But what to do with all this extra time? Surely you have done your Spring cleaning multiple times over. No doubt you have zoomed with your family way too much. You’ve exhausted your Settlers game and destroyed all of the books on your bookshelf.

Welcome to what is the first pandemic for most of us! My parents predate polio so this pandemic is new even for them. You might be scared. You might be wondering if this is the new normal. The truth is—no one knows how long this pandemic will last. No one knows how long you will have to shelter in place. It’s a scary time for us all, worried about our health and the health of our vulnerable loved ones.
But, once this immediate health crisis passes (and it will—rest assured, life will return to normal)—what will happen to the economy? Many folks have been laid off, most temporarily, some permanently. Others have had their jobs phased out or changed. The stock market is as volatile as ever. While Oregon has gone on a necessary and temporary lockdown as we work to flatten the curve of Covid-19. But, even though many of our bars and restaurants are temporarily closed (though, many are still open for take out, so if you can support your local eateries—and Powell’s—please do so!) You can still get outside and enjoy nature… just keep your social distance.
Thankfully, spring time in Portland, Oregon and the surrounding areas is a great time to be outside. With this lockdown and quarantine, though, it’s necessary for sanity! But, fresh air and exercise are also good for the health and stress and keeping healthy is vitally important right now.
