Timbers

Portland, Oregon is crazy for sports. Our fans are among the most loyal, knowledgeable and passionate in the United States. Despite our love and passion for sports, as a medium-sized city we do not have many top level professional sports franchises within our borders, aside from the Portland Trail Blazers (our beloved basketball team).

The Portland Timbers are looking to change this.

Soccer may be far down on the national radar as far as major sports go—but not in Portland. The Portland Timbers have a fan base of rabid fanatics (The Timbers Army) that goes to every home game and cheers on the local boys while trying to increase national interest in soccer. The Timbers, whom joined the MLS in 2011 after a long battle by owner Merritt Paulson to bring the storied franchise to the soccer mainstream, are like a new toy that many of us have not yet discovered.

Donned in forest green and red, the Timbers have steadily risen to the top ranks of the professional soccer world. Beginning life in 1975 as a lower level soccer team, the Timbers have a long, yet mostly unknown history, of great teams and tremendous play. Since joining the MLS, they have become a model franchise and in 2013, they dominated the Western Conference in the regular season, toppling rival, Seattle Sounders, in the playoffs, before ultimately falling in the conference finals. This is a young team on the rise and they have steadily improved each year that they have been a part of the MLS. Now is the time to jump on the bandwagon.

Playing their home games at Jeld-Wen Field, Timbers matches are affordable and easy to get too. The MAX drops you off right at the stadium and, with its central location, travel time is minimal. Maybe you’re like me and at first you really didn’t get the appeal of soccer. Maybe you didn’t understand it and thought it was a bunch of folks running around in shorts and pads kicking a ball and occasionally scoring. Well, now that there is a local team to root for, now is the time to check this sport out. There’s a reason why soccer is the most popular sport in the world. Timbers games are a unique experience and great way to enjoy the outdoors and the passionate people of Portland, Oregon.

True Portlanders don Timbers scarves, shirts and hats. True Portlanders go to Jeld-Wen Field and cheer on the Timbers. True Portlanders go to the games, support the team, and begin to develop an understanding about the game of soccer. True Portlanders join the Timbers Army… are you a True Portlander?
