Water Park

I love to swim. So do my kids. So does my wife. What’s not to love? It’s resistance free exercise that is good for the whole body. It’s a lot of fun, too.
But, this is Oregon so, swimming outdoors isn’t available year round. Not if you want to refrain from getting frostbite and pneumonia. Fortunately, we have a lot of indoor water parks available here in the area, the favorite, at least for me and my family, is the North Clackamas Aquatic Park in Clackamas.
I remember, as a kid when this place first opened. I was in awe. I’d never seen so many watery delights under one roof as I did there. I went frequently. I still do. I imagine I always will.
It’s really a blast for everyone. Something for every member of my finnicky family to enjoy. My kids learned to swim here and it’s still their favorite place to go for aquatic experiences. Me and my son, we love to zoom down twisty tube slides. It’s my idea of a thrill ride, with a fun and so ...

Evolution

“I want to get into better shape. I want to work out more.” I said this on January 1st, 2020. And 2019, and 2018, and… you get the picture. This is the most common of all resolutions. It’s when gyms see a huge spike in membership and when health food stores see a huge uptick in business. It never lasts, of course. Most people have abandoned this resolution by the beginning of February.
This won’t be me. Not this year. Not again. The hands of the clock are ticking and, without being in better shape, they may not click for as long.
Portland, Oregon is a health conscious, outdoorsy city. If there’s motivation to stay in shape, just look outside. One activity I’ve always wanted to try is mountain climbing. I like the danger and I like the exertion and sense of accomplishment. So, when I went down to Yosemite over the Holidays, I tried it. And failed. Did I mention exertion. Exertion requires oxygen. Turns out, climbing mountains can suck the bre ...

Birdie Time Pub

Okay. So now that we have gotten the resolution to stay in shape out of the way and have put forward a plan of action that seems really doable, let’s focus on resolution number two. This one should be easy to complete living in here in Portland: Exploring a new pub or restaurant every week. That means I only need to check out 52 new places this year. With thousands of unexplored eateries and pubs here in town, this will be a snap.
For my first one, I decided to check out one that kind of helps me keep resolution two as well: Birdie Time Pub.
Birdie Time Pub, located at 925 Main in Southeast Portland, is a pub like no other. While most bars and pubs have pool and darts and air hockey, this one I truly unique. With its live-edge wood decorating the walls and tin roof, Birdie Time Pub is a venue jam-packed with an inimitable atmosphere.
After my first visit, I determined that this would be my  go-to spot for anyone willing to enjoy a casual drink.  This is saying some ...

Oregon Sayings

As a lifelong Oregonian, there are a lot of things that I have said ad heard that just make sense to me.  I don't think of some of these things as being unique to this little place we call home. That is, until i said down with my friend from Texas. See, she was confused and horrified because I told her I wanted to elephant ear.
"You want a what?"
"An elephant ear. You know what elephant ears are?"
"Sounds horrifying."
So I  explained to her that I wasn't going elephant hunting. I further described what she eventually called a funnel cake.
So, there you go. Lesson one. So, I thought I would bust out some other Portland and Oregon specific terms for clarity- should the need for clarity arise.
Another less horrfying yet equally confusing food name is the JoJo, or potato wedge. These babies are carb friendly deliciousness and, apparently, calling them JoJo’s anywhere else will get you strange looks and, most sad of all no potato wedges.
Want to go to the beach? Wel ...

Garage Sale

Portland folks love vintage stuff. And we love a bargain. Thrift stores, secondhand stores and garage sales are right in our wheel house. It’s just in out nature to enjoy secondhand stuff.

So, this weekend in Ridgefield, Washington about forty-five minutes north or Portland, is going to be pure heavy for the thrifty lover of second hand and vintage treasures. This community garage sale which offers forty-dollar tickets for early entry is a thrice yearly event that offers gobs of hidden treasures waiting for the right person to come along. Is that person you?

This accurately named community garage sale discharges thousands of products and has never ever disappointed me. Plus if you get the early bird entry, which I wholly recommend, your odds are fantastic that you will get that hidden treasure you’ve been seeking. Last year, I found a really cool gold pocket watch you know, one of those numbers with a chain. It works like a dream and I feel super cool when I have it o ...
